Planning a West Virginia elopement means choosing a wedding day that’s intentional, adventurous, and completely unique. West Virginia is truly one of the most underrated places to elope in the U.S., with the most stunning panoramic mountain views, lush forests, and iconic natural gems. Whether you’re dreaming of saying your vows under a glowing sunrise or an adventure-filled day chasing waterfalls, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know you have the elopement of your dreams.
As a born and raised WV photographer who lives for helping couples create unforgettable experiences, I’m here to make planning your elopement seamless, stress-free and wild in all the best ways.

MYTH: Eloping means running away to the courthouse to get married in secret.
An elopement is a deeply intentional, experience-driven way to get married that’s entirely focused on your connection– without the pressure, expectations, and mile-long guest list. It’s a wedding day that’s designed to honor everything that’s meaningful to you.
Eloping in West Virginia might look like a sunrise hike to your favorite overlook. Exchanging vows in a bed of sunshine and wildflowers. Quiet moments at a waterfall, or under a night sky full of stars. It can be anything you want– bring your favorite people along, or just the two of you. It can be spontaneous and wild, or carefully planned to the last detail. That’s the beauty of eloping – it can be anything you want!
At its core, eloping gives couples full permission to do things their way. To create a wedding day that feels true to you with no rules.
There’s many reasons why a couple chooses to elope. Some couples want a day that’s all about celebrating their commitment to one another, instead of a huge event that’s led by a timeline that’s centered around taking photos. Some couples would rather simply invest more into other things instead of a wedding, like a home. Maybe when you think about having a big traditional wedding day, you find yourself feeling uninspired.
Intuitively come up with a wedding moodboard. Use Pinterest, social media and other publications to get yourself brainstorming about your perfect elopement day in West Virginia. Try to envision yourselves in the content you’re pinning. Take notice of which themes and elements frequently pop up.
Start listing the top elements you’re prioritizing for your elopement. The perfect location, your dream experience, the overall vibes of the day. Rank them from 1-10 to visualize what’s most important to you.
Setting a clear budget is a smart way to kick off the elopement planning process. Giving yourself a realistic budget can help set clear expectations for the planning process while also preventing putting yourselves in debt.

When it comes to choosing the perfect location for your elopement, West Virginia actually spoils you with choices. There’s natural beauty in every corner – from insane sweeping mountain views to rocky cliffs that touch the clouds. We have some bucket-list-worthy State and National Parks. There’s something for everyone here; some of the prettiest views are accessible even if you’re not a pro hiker.
As an adventurous photographer who’s spent her entire life roaming the mountains here, I’m here to help you sort through all of the options and plan the details so you land on a place that feels unmistakably you.
When you’re dreaming about your elopement day, what does the scene around you look like? Are you on top of the world at an overlook in the mountains? Or surrounded by a blooming bed of wildflowers? Maybe you’re more adventurous and you want to elope at a waterfall, or exchange your vows under the stars.
If you need a little inspiration to get you brainstorming, here’s a quick list of some of the best places to elope in West Virginia: ENTER BLOG
Before you settle on a spot, take some time to get to know it – like really well. West Virginia changes personality with every season, and a place that’s wild and green in July can feel totally different in October (in all the best ways). Check what the scenery looks like throughout the year, whether the spot requires any hiking, and if the views hit harder at sunrise vs sunset.
Some places in West Virginia are peaceful and quaint year-round, and others can be a revolving door for tourists, hikers, and weekend travelers. You can expect that especially during peak fall color and peak wildflower season in the summer. Before committing to a location, check its popularity and peak crowd dates & times. Most couples are able to skip the crowds simply by choosing to elope on a weekday, and earlier in the morning (sunrise).
It’s also important to note that some of West Virginia’s most beloved places to elope such as Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob experience seasonal gate closures from mid November to April, due to harsh weather conditions.
If you’re planning to invite your favorite folks along, it’s important to make sure that your location choice can accommodate guests. Some locations have a maximum limit as to how many guests you can have and may require permits.
After you’ve found the perfect location to elope, now you want to consider the best time of year to make it happen.
I’ve helped couples plan their adventure elopement with as little as 1 weeks’ notice and as early as 18 months out. One principle always remains the same – it’s so necessary to give yourselves ample time to plan your elopement.
Deciding whether to include guests in your elopement is one of the most personal choices you’ll make, and it’s not one to take lightly! There’s no “right way” to do it – some couples want a “just us” experience, while others want to celebrate with a handful of their favorite folks. It’s all about what feels most authentic to you and the experience you want to create.
Take time to sit down with your partner and ask yourselves:
And from a different perspective:

It’s crucial to hire a vendor team that truly resonates and understands you. Choosing the right photographer for you is one of the most important steps in planning your elopement. After the big day, your photos are the one thing you’ll carry with you forever. These photos showcase the start of your legacy together and will be shared with generations after you.
Some couples choose to hire an elopement planner, especially if they’re inhibiting guests or having any setups. Planners will handle the logistics of the day, so that you can be fully present and have a seamless, stress-free wedding experience.
Your photographer spends more time with you on your wedding day than any other wedding vendor. It’s hella important that you align with them. If your elopement falls more into adventurous territory, you need someone who’s not only up for the task but actually thrives in it. That’s the heartbeat of my work. I’m an adventure-ready, West-Virginia-raised elopement photographer who knows these mountains, the conditions, and the experience inside and out.
You need an officiant to perform your ceremony in West Virginia. There’s an officiant out there for everyone, even couples that want to have a non-traditional ceremony, like handfasting or candle lighting. There’s even non-religious officiants.
There’s a lot of amazing and talented vendors out there that are ready to help make your elopement day completely unforgettable. I also keep a curated list of incredible vendors that I recommend, both local to West Virginia and artisans from other areas.
Some of the most common vendors that couples choose to hire are:
To get your marriage license in West Virginia, you must both apply in-person at a county commissions office with:
It costs $57 normally, but if you can provide proof of completion for a marriage counseling course, the cost is $37.
The marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. There’s also no waiting period– you could go elope the same day! Your officiant will sign the marriage license after the ceremony and return it to the County Clerk’s office for you.
West Virginia doesn’t require any witnesses either. Although, I’ve personally signed many marriage certificates as one!
There are so many unique places to stay in Almost Heaven during your elopement, like domes and yurts, cozy cabins, tree houses, luxurious resorts, bed & breakfast, and historic sites. I highly recommend booking your stay farther in advance, especially if you’re staying in the spring, early summer, or fall seasons. These are the busiest and book up faster.
If you’re dreaming of having a reception at your place, check that events are permitted. Some listings are even pet friendly!
Creating a timeline is crucial to having the wedding of your dreams, because it gives you the freedom to be fully present and make the most out of your elopement day. With me as your photographer, I help couples live their wildest dreams with a custom timeline that’s designed to prioritize the things that are most important to them. I believe that no two elopements are exactly alike, and I build every timeline to thoughtfully reflect your unique story and the legacy you want to tell forever.

Keeping your “why” in mind, re-imagine what you want your wedding day to look and feel like. Together, you should take time to rank which moments from the day mean the most to you, and that you want captured the most.
You can make your elopement day truly yours when you incorporate the things you love to do together in your plans. Taking the time to sit and really think about the things you love to do and what you want to spend your day doing together can help lay the foundation for your best day ever. Do you love trying new food spots together? Maybe you’re both avid hikers or you love stargazing.
When you’re truly having a good time, your photos will show that! I help couples make room for spontaneous and authentic moments. Trust me, posed photos with amazing light are great, but the honest moments will always be your favorite. When we create your elopement day timeline together, I build it around what matters most to you, leaving as much space as possible for exploring, pausing, and breathing it all in.
Even the most well planned elopement days should have a solid backup plan in place. West Virginia’s weather can be unpredictable at times, and closures do happen. Having a backup plan doesn’t take away from the magic of your vision; it protects it. I don’t just help you come up with a plan b and c, I help you craft one that feels just as intentional as the original plan. With me on your team, you’ll have two or three solid backup options that match your adventure.

Planning your elopement in West Virginia gives you space to slow down, roam freely, and have a wedding day that’s intentional, truly intimate, and actually unique. I’m here to help you make it fun, meaningful, and beautiful from start to finish. Ready to make this real? Let’s start planning your dream elopement!
