Do your research

Before you settle on a spot, take some time to get to know it – like really well. West Virginia changes personality with every season, and a place that’s wild and green in July can feel totally different in October (in all the best ways). Check what the scenery looks like throughout the year, whether the spot requires any hiking, and if the views hit harder at sunrise vs sunset.

Look into crowds and peak season

Some places in West Virginia are peaceful and quaint year-round, and others can be a revolving door for tourists, hikers, and weekend travelers. You can expect that especially during peak fall color and peak wildflower season in the summer. Before committing to a location, check its popularity and peak crowd dates & times. Most couples are able to skip the crowds simply by choosing to elope on a weekday, and earlier in the morning (sunrise).

It’s also important to note that some of West Virginia’s most beloved places to elope such as Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob experience seasonal gate closures from mid November to April, due to harsh weather conditions.

Bringing guests along

If you’re planning to invite your favorite folks along, it’s important to make sure that your location choice can accommodate guests. Some locations have a maximum limit as to how many guests you can have and may require permits.

I’ve helped couples plan their adventure elopement with as little as 1 weeks’ notice and as early as 18 months out. One principle always remains the same – it’s so necessary to give yourselves ample time to plan your elopement.

• Vendors can book out months (or even years) in advance. It’s best to secure your vendor team early in the planning process.
• Permit applications may take a few weeks.
• Giving yourselves room to breathe will avoid making the planning process stressful.

Pick the guests

Deciding whether to include guests in your elopement is one of the most personal choices you’ll make, and it’s not one to take lightly! There’s no “right way” to do it – some couples want a “just us” experience, while others want to celebrate with a handful of their favorite folks. It’s all about what feels most authentic to you and the experience you want to create.

• Would your elopement day be the same if they didn’t attend?

It’s crucial to hire a vendor team that truly resonates and understands you. Choosing the right photographer for you is one of the most important steps in planning your elopement. After the big day, your photos are the one thing you’ll carry with you forever. These photos showcase the start of your legacy together and will be shared with generations after you.

Consider a planner

Some couples choose to hire an elopement planner, especially if they’re inhibiting guests or having any setups. Planners will handle the logistics of the day, so that you can be fully present and have a seamless, stress-free wedding experience.

Choose your photographer

Your photographer spends more time with you on your wedding day than any other wedding vendor. It’s hella important that you align with them. If your elopement falls more into adventurous territory, you need someone who’s not only up for the task but actually thrives in it. That’s the heartbeat of my work. Find your officiant

You need an officiant to perform your ceremony in West Virginia. There’s an officiant out there for everyone, even couples that want to have a non-traditional ceremony, like handfasting or candle lighting. There’s even non-religious officiants.

Find your vendor dream team

There’s a lot of amazing and talented vendors out there that are ready to help make your elopement day completely unforgettable. I also keep a curated list of incredible vendors that I recommend, both local to West Virginia and artisans from other areas.

Prepare to obtain your marriage license

To get your marriage license in West Virginia, you must both apply in-person at a county commissions office with:

• A valid photo ID
• Your social security
• Birth information for both parents

It costs $57 normally, but if you can provide proof of completion for a marriage counseling course, the cost is $37.

The marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. There’s also no waiting period– you could go elope the same day! Your officiant will sign the marriage license after the ceremony and return it to the County Clerk’s office for you.

West Virginia doesn’t require any witnesses either. Although, I’ve personally signed many marriage certificates as one!

Book travel and accommodations

There are so many unique places to stay in Almost Heaven during your elopement, like domes and yurts, cozy cabins, tree houses, luxurious resorts, bed & breakfast, and historic sites. I highly recommend booking your stay farther in advance, especially if you’re staying in the spring, early summer, or fall seasons. These are the busiest and book up faster.

Receptions

If you’re dreaming of having a reception at your place, check that events are permitted. Some listings are even pet friendly!
